Meet the Made on Salt Spring Kids – Aila and Sydney Gessinder

Entrepreneurship starts early on Salt Spring. Just ask Aila and Sydney Gessinder, founders of Salt Spring Slime and Kids 2 Kids T-shirts – our youngest vendors to showcase their wares at Made on Salt Spring this weekend at Heritage Hall in Vancouver.

“For our t-shirts, we do our own drawings and then we screen print them on t-shirts,” says Aila. “The design is called the wildlife of Salt Spring. Sydney drew the birds, I drew the giraffe, and we both drew the wildlife. Since everyone is hand screen-printed, every t-shirt is slightly different. We started at the t-shirts in 2016 when I was 12 and Sydney was nine.” Continue reading “Meet the Made on Salt Spring Kids – Aila and Sydney Gessinder”

MOSS Vendor Profile – Meet The Bubble and Squeak Soapery

For Linda Bradford, the birth of The Bubble and Squeak Soapery came as a result of a real and personal need more than 20 years ago. She originally started making handmade, organic soaps and shampoos for her husband and daughter, who reacted to the chemicals in commercial soaps, and then for the guests in her B&B.

“Our climate allows us to grow most of the organic botanicals used in the soaps in our sprawling garden on Mount Maxwell,” Linda says. “Our soaps and shampoos are 100% chemical-free, with gentle, essential oil fragrances. Some of the soaps contain locally-sourced tallow, while others are purely vegetarian.” Continue reading “MOSS Vendor Profile – Meet The Bubble and Squeak Soapery”

MOSS Vendor Profile – lavender & black

Located on the north end of Salt Spring Island, nestled between mature fir, arbutus and maple trees, and boasting photo-worthy views over Stuart Channel, the  lavender & black farm grows 10 different varieties of lavender. The dried and fresh lavender, culinary lavender buds for cooking and baking, and fragrant helichrysum and other aromatic plants form the base of the farm’s product line, including  essential oils that the owners Ben and Awatief distill themselves.

The therapudic oils and lavender combine to produce  100% natural fragrances, aromatherapy blends, soaps and honey under the alembic essences brand. All the products are vegan, and contain no artificial fragrances, colorants, or preservatives. Elfworks Studio – A Labour of Love

Elfworks StudiosRoss Atkinson and Susanna Kong have honed their woodworking and fibre arts skills as vendors at the Salt Spring Saturday Market – but their expertise goes back to childhood. Both Ross and Susanna were taught to knit as young children in a bid to get them to sit still and learn something productive.  And Ross and Susanna got their first taste of woodworking in elementary school – a love that Ross never lost even through his years in the corporate world.

The Fruits of Her Labour – Meet Bree Eagle of Salt Spring Artisan Vinegar

Curiosity – and a discerning palate – changed Bree Eagle’s life quite unexpectedly.

“I used to be a farmer on Salt Spring and in the winters I got a job at a youbrew making fruit wines ,” Bree said.  “I was cleaning out a back room one day and came upon  a couple of old bottles of wine. I was going to toss them out, but I tasted them instead – and they tasted great!” Continue reading “The Fruits of Her Labour – Meet Bree Eagle of Salt Spring Artisan Vinegar”

The Salt of Our Earth – Meet Salt Spring Sea Salt

Philippe Marill & Carolyn Kvajic had visited Salt Spring Island many times before succumbing to its  natural beauty and becoming residents four years ago. The idyllic location prompted them to create Salt Spring Sea Salt, blending  Philippe’s French heritage with West Coast inspiration.

MOSS Vendor Spotlight – Álvaro Sánchez

It’s March – and we’re counting down the days before Made on Salt Spring brings our world-famous Saturday Market to Vancouver’s Heritage Hall the weekend of March 23 to March 25.

We’ll be featuring the products of dozens of makers, creators and designers – and from now till the start of the show, we’ll be taking an up-close and personal look at some of these talented vendors – starting with self-taught silversmith and MOSS organizer Álvaro Sánchez.

Born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Álvaro studied design, music and architecture and lived throughout Latin America before settling on Salt Spring Island in 1990. “In the course of my travels I’ve been able to gather many cultural and artistic influences that have inspired my designs,” he said. Using precious metals and natural gems, Álvaro creates wearable art that is distinctly Latin American.
